Care & Maintenance of Your Concrete

Taking care of your concrete sinks, furniture and countertops does not take a lot of effort, but does require you to understand the kind of things that could cause problems.

Concrete naturally is a porous material — when substances enter these pores and become trapped, your concrete becomes stained. To defend against this porosity, we apply a sealer to all of our concrete pieces.

*For the first 4-6 weeks as the concrete continues to cure, do not leave any items on the concrete for a prolonged period of time and take extra care to immediately wipe up any spills. During this period, your concrete may darken in the areas where water is left on the surface. This is not an indication that the sealer is not working. We use a breathable, water-based sealer and darkening is in fact a normal reaction as the sealer continues to cure.

Care Instructions:

  • Wipe spills as they occur using a damp cloth or gentle cleaning solution.

  • Avoid using abrasive cleaners or harsh scrubbing. Use Clorox wipes or bleach based cleaner for daily cleaning on all concrete. Should a stain occur, apply household bleach and let it sit until the stain disappears.

  • NEVER allow unfinished ceramics to sit on your concrete. The ceramic will compete for moisture with the concrete and could leave a blemish that can't be repaired.

  • Avoid petroleum-based products (fuel, rubber, etc.) on the concrete.

  • Be especially attentive to cleaning up grease and oils as they can penetrate the surface and darken the concrete.

  • Acidic liquids, especially limes and lemons, should be wiped up immediately as they may mar the finish of the sealer.

  • Use coasters, felt, or silicone pads beneath anything that will live on the concrete, especially soap dispensers on sinks. Trapped water and/or soap can leave darkening or white rings that can take a long time to dissipate.

  • Always use a cutting board and never cut directly on the concrete.

  • Avoid placing hot cookware directly from the stove or oven onto the concrete.

Reapplication of the sealer is recommended every 5-10 years based on wear and use, no stripping required.
